Google India has launched a program called India Get Online targeting Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) in India. The program is offered in conjunction with HostGator and ICICI Bank.
With this initiative Google aims to Break down the barriers that stop small businesses from getting online – by offering a quick, easy and free tool to set up and host a website. Our goal is to help 500,000 small medium businesses in India to get online in next three years through this program
What is the offer?
Google is making available a free .in web domain along with free hosting for one year. HostGator is helping out with the website hosting while the domain is registered to your name. However it has been made mandatory to have a PAN/TAN to prevent multiple registrations and spammers.
They are also offering the Google Apps service for free, along with other Google products like Gmail, Google Analytics, Google Docs and more. A big bonus is the INR 2.5k worth Google Adwords coupons which could prove quite effective for the SMBs.
Even though it is not clear how much the users will have to pay after an year to continue the service, Google promises that it will be a “discounted amount”.
What Google sets to gain from the Offer?
With more than 8 million SMBs existing in India and less than 5% having an online Google has targeted a huge market with a great offer. It is quite clear that all the stakeholders are set to gain in the long run.
Once the site is setup and running, SMBs will try and market it to the larger audience. Google Adwords is the ideal tool for this and Google has already offered them a taste of it with the INR 2.5k coupons. After the free coupons are exhausted many will seek to continue, giving Google revenue from Adwords.
Clearly if the customers choose to continue after an year, they will be using Google Apps. This will give Google a strong foothold in the SMB market where it can further promote all its services and grab larger market share.
It only remains to see how many customers will hang onto the service after a period of one year. And that will be the key turning point of this initiative.
